Naturalization & Citizenship

Eligibility for the Naturalization Application

Before starting the application process, you must ensure you are eligible to become a U.S. citizen through the naturalization process. You must fulfill the following conditions to become eligible. They include:

  • Be 18 years and above
  • Be a permanent united states resident for at least five years
  • Live within a state where you claim to be a resident for at least 3months
  • Demonstrate good moral character
  • Have basic knowledge of English and U.S. history and government
  • Show adherence to the principles of the U.S. constitution.

Once eligible, you can go ahead and start the application process.

The Naturalization Process

Acquiring U.S. citizenship through the naturalization process involves several stages, from filling out the N-400 form to taking an oath of allegiance. Our naturalization attorney will guide you and explain each step to ensure success.

  • Stage one.The first step in the naturalization process involves filling the N-400 with the required filing fees at the immigration service center. The N-400 form is a 20 paged document containing 18 different parts. Part 12 of the form is the most complex part that involves 50 yes/no questions that inquire if you have been involved in any criminal activities.
  • Stage two. After submitting your application, you will receive a notice of a fingerprint appointment date and a neutralization interview. Our neutralization will adequately prepare you for the interview before your appointment date. A naturalization interview is typically held at the regional USCIS office and takes approximately 20 minutes. The interview is meant for the USCIS to review the application and gauge the applicant's proficiency in English. The immigration officer will also test the applicant's knowledge of U.S. history and government. If the applicant satisfies the immigration officer and their file is complete, they will be scheduled for a swearing-in ceremony.
  • Stage three. The applicant is issued an appointment notice with a list of questions that need to be submitted at the swearing-in ceremony. This is to ensure that the applicant has maintained an excellent moral character between the time the interview was held and the swearing-in ceremony. Before being sworn in, the applicant must submit their I-551 card, i.e., the legal permanent residency document, and is issued with a neutralization certificate. The applicant now becomes a U.S. citizen officially. The naturalization process can be complex and tiring, but working with our experienced naturalization attorneys can ease the process.
